Day 3 of 10 Writing FayTown Calling
It’s six in the morning, so forgive my tenses, but for me it’s still Sunday.
Didn’t begin writing until 4:30 today after going to the grocery store. Had enough time to make sure the work I’d done the day before was good and then it was time to make dinner. This actually turned out to be more productive than anticipated because I was able to address an issue that’s been bothering me in the upcoming section. So, while making hamburger patties, I walked through how the next couple chapters needed to go.
After that, I didn’t get to get back to writing until midnight. I wrote about three thousand words, working from what I’d thought up earlier, creating a chapter I didn’t even know what going to exist but am very happy with. This will lead into the action scene I’ve been putting off but is fully outlined (as I was making french fries). I also had an idea for a chapter earlier in the book that I think will fit well. Will have to see.
So, another section down. My goal for tomorrow (today really) is to get this action scene down and then the next six sections. That sounds like a lot (and it probably is more than I think it is) but three or four of those sections are pretty much done, requiring only minor changes. Two have to be written but they’re both chapters that have to do with Virgil’s mind and those always seem to flow really well for me (knock on wood).
With today’s work, I’m over halfway done with FayTown Calling and seven days to go. I’m going to have to catch up with work stuff (day job work stuff) and other things today (and sleep, I guess) but I’ve got my plans.
Lastly, and this is purely a sidenote on creativity, specifically never knowing what might influence you. I needed a character to describe something as opulent, and as with many things, one of the most distinct aspects about a place can be the food. I don’t know if it was the late hour or what but the first thing that popped into my mind was an episode of Wishbone, the one about Journey to the West. For those unfamiliar, Journey to the West is a massive Chinese story that services a multitude of purposes in their mythology and culture. Honestly, I’m not that familiar with it. Other than certain references from DragonBall Z and a really, really bad Jackie Chan movie, I’m not that familiar with Chinese mythology and lore. What I referenced specifically are the peaches of immortality, but that’s not important. What’s important is that my world just gained a whole new pantheon. I haven’t even had a chance to really dig in, but there are a multitude of ways I can see using Sun Wukong, the Jade Emperor, and even some other Chinese tales and mythos like the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
All because of Wishbone.
Anyway, I’ll have my next update on Tuesday.
