My Review of Skin Game

I have to admit, I’ve been a bit worried about the Dresden Files. It started with Turn Coat, which was one of my least favorite in the series. I don’t know what it was, it just never scratched that itch I have for the Dresden Files. Then there was Changes, which was good, but the whole point of that book was to be purposely out of sync with the tropes, tone, and style of the rest of the series (hence the name, Changes). Ghost Story was a mix of really bad and really good. I thought Corpsetaker was an odd villain to revisit, but she/he/it really just seemed to serve as a backdrop for Harry’s out of body experience and flashbacks, where the story really shined. Cold Nights was good, but it had a few problems for me, I could take it or leave it. So, yeah, I’ve been a bit worried… Not anymore….

Day 6 of 10 Writing FayTown Calling

Well… I got the new Dresden Files book, Skin Game… So…didn’t really get much writing done. I took a cursory glance at the section I’d completed in day 5, it held up better than I expected. Other than that, I just read. It’s been good, so good that I ignored my writing, didn’t even write my progress report. Right now it’s 10:30 in the morning on Thursday. I’ll be reading a bit more, there’s no denying it, but I will be doubling up on writing this afternoon and tonight, catching up on what I was supposed to do yesterday and moving things along.

Day 5 of 10 Writing FayTown Calling

I had nine sections to go over and I did five of them, including one that I had no idea what to do with and had to make from scratch. It went well and I’ve added about 5,000 words to the story, as well as moving three of the sections from Mess or Needs Work to Happy. One of the five is still Mess (because it’s five in the morning and I’m tired) and the other is Missing Something. No idea what, but that’s the reason for the label. I was very happy with the sections I moved to Happy. I was, well, let’s just say I was concerned with their quality. That’s where most of my work went today, making them better, making them flow. Tomorrow’s goal is to complete the rest of what I wanted to do today. It will probably included looking at this last section, moving it from Mess to…

Day 3 of 10 Writing FayTown Calling

It’s six in the morning, so forgive my tenses, but for me it’s still Sunday. Didn’t begin writing until 4:30 today after going to the grocery store. Had enough time to make sure the work I’d done the day before was good and then it was time to make dinner. This actually turned out to be more productive than anticipated because I was able to address an issue that’s been bothering me in the upcoming section. So, while making hamburger patties, I walked through how the next couple chapters needed to go. After that, I didn’t get to get back to writing until midnight. I wrote about three thousand words, working from what I’d thought up earlier, creating a chapter I didn’t even know what going to exist but am very happy with. This will lead into the action scene I’ve been putting off but is fully outlined (as I…

Day 2 of 10 Writing FayTown Calling

I decided to do this one live since it’s four in the morning and this day has given me some trouble. I spent the afternoon honing out the sections I had trouble with the night before, only to go back and not really like what I’d done. I don’t know if it’s the concept of what I’ve added or my execution, but I decided to leave it for now and move on. Tonight didn’t go much better, much as I hate to admit it. I got started around midnight and couldn’t find the flow of things, worse, I kept second guessing what I had and where I was going. That led to me trying to get organized. I storyboarded some concepts (which helped) and wrote some things out in a notebook (which helped some more) and then looked over the chapters I had looking at the work it would take…
